Grafton, the Jacaranda city, is one of the most charming provincial cities in Australia, renowned not only for its beautiful tree-lined Jacarandas, but for its graceful old buildings.

Grafton’s Jacaranda Festival was first held in 1935 and has remained the longest running floral festival in Australia. Each year, on the last Saturday in October, showcases the start of the Festival with a queen crowning ceremony, finishing off with a spectacular street parade on the final weekend.

The jacaranda trees were initially planted by a local seed merchant called Volkers in the 1870s, and the city now blooms into life in spring with their mauve blossoms. 24 parks in Grafton are loaded with more than 6,500 trees.

Further east of Grafton, the Yuraygir National Park displays an astonishing region of the coast crowded with wildlife, unspoiled beaches, paperbark lagoons, high dunes, and freshwater streams. Also, there are coastal walking trails that are reportedly the best in the State.

While in Grafton, who could miss the Christ Church Cathedral? Built in 1884 by John Horbury Hunt, it was designed along Gothic lines with striking stained glass windows, towering arches, and a spacious interior. Classified by the National Trust, this beautiful Cathedral is Grafton’s finest.

Just one and a half hours northwest of Grafton is the pristine Clarence Gorge where impressive rapids and waterfalls interact with segments of calm water and deep pools. Fishing is first-rate, and the scenery is breathtaking. On sunny days, the Rainbow Falls showcases its namesake. Guided tours are available as the Gorge is surrounded on both sides by private property.

The headquarters of the Clarence River Historical Society is housed in Schaeffer House which has a Research Room and Museum. Named after Grafton’s first architect, F W C Schaeffer, son of a pioneer German family, the Homestead was built between 1901 and 1903. Schaeffer House displays beautiful glassware, china, and furniture that have been offered to the Society over many years.

Another of Grafton’s Clarence Valley attractions is the Grafton Regional Art Gallery which was restored in the 1880s. The Gallery’s collection holds numerous examples of wonderful Australian drawings, including the historical collection of Australian flora and fauna by O’Grady in watercolour. There are also works by local area and regional artists. Prints and ceramics form the remainder of the works.

Being the prosperous commercial heart of the Clarence Valley, Grafton always has a smorgasbord of entertainment and attractions to suit one and all.
