A little about our gorgeous little town Grafton: Founded in 1851, Grafton is the commercial hub of the Clarence River Valley, with many tree-lined streets and historic buildings. Situated about 340 kilometres south of Brisbane and 630 kilometres north of Sydney, Grafton has a population of approximately 18,000 residents.

Descendants of the Gumbainggir and Bundjalung indigenous peoples can still be found in the Grafton district, as the Clarence River was the border between the two tribes before European settlement.

The cedar-getters were the first white settlers to open up areas in Grafton, with an escaped convict, Richard Craig being the first to ‘discover’ the region in 1831. He was given a pardon and one hundred pounds to explore the area of the rich ‘red gold’ cedar trees waiting to be harvested, and in no time, word had spread about the wealth to be made.

John Small was one of the early pioneers to take advantage, and occupied land on Woodford Island. Grafton was formed not long after, with Governor FitzRoy officially naming the town in 1851. He adopted the name after his grandfather, the Duke of Grafton, a past Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In 1885, it was proclaimed a city.

Local industries consist of beef cattle, logging, sugar, fishing, manufacturing and tourism, which is now a growing section of the economy. In fact, the tree-lined streets of Jacaranda have brought Grafton into prominence with the annual Jacaranda Festival, held every year in the months of October and November.

The Grafton Cup horse race is also a yearly event, with a half-day holiday being observed for the Cup day. Grafton is also a noted birthplace for famous country music celebrities. Troy Cassar-Daley is one such artist who received four Golden Guitar awards in the Tamworth Country Music Awards in 2006, and Brooke McClymont also achieved an award for her country music talent at the same event. Sister, Samantha McClymont received the Jacaranda Queen award.

The Clarence is one of Australia’s most imposing rivers, and is an overriding feature in the lifestyle and landscape of Grafton. Events such as sail, dragon boat, power boat racing and the Head of the River rowing regatta in December, plus one of the leading water ski events in Australia, the renowned Bridge to Bridge Ski Race, are all significant events happening on the Clarence.

The notorious Grafton Gaol, the Christ Church Cathedral, and selected historic homes, are listed and categorised by the National Trust.

Grafton has rich history as a city, and all can be witnessed through one of the museums open to the public.
